About the Breed
Complete care guide for the Mudhol Hound
The Mudhol Hound, also known as Caravan Hound or Kathewar, is an elegant sighthound from Karnataka. With their slender build, deep chest, and powerful legs, these dogs are built for speed and endurance. The Mudhol is the first Indian dog breed to be drafted into the Indian Army's surveillance unit, showcasing their remarkable abilities.
The Mudhol Hound gets its name from the town of Mudhol in Karnataka where the breed was patronized by the Raja of Mudhol. Historical records suggest that the king gifted a pair of these hounds to King George V during British rule, introducing the breed to the Western world. Traditionally, these dogs were kept by nomadic tribes like the Banjara for hunting and guarding. Today, efforts are being made by organizations like the Indian National Kennel Club to preserve and promote this indigenous breed.
Temperament
Mudhol Hounds are known for their independent nature and remarkable intelligence. They form strong bonds with their owners but can be reserved with strangers. These dogs have a strong prey drive due to their hunting heritage. While gentle and affectionate with family, they are alert and protective. Their high energy requires owners who can provide adequate exercise and stimulation.
